What is a serum?

Skincare

(and why you don’t need it)

A serum is a skincare product that’s formulated with a higher concentration of active ingredients than the products in your basic skincare routine.

You would apply it after cleansing, but before moisturising. It’s different to a moisturiser since it is thinner in consistency, so it’s made to be layered beneath moisturisers.

When is the right age to use it?

We’d recommend to add serums to your routine until after you turn 25.

Why should teens use it?

Serums are most often used for anti-aging benefits, which of course teens don’t need, or they are powered by ingredients that are not suitable for teens, like Vitamin C.

We’d recommend that teens don’t use a serum, as it’s just another product in your skincare routine that you really don’t need. It’s better to simplify and keep to a minimal amount of products, so as not to overcomplicate things for your skin.

Only if you have extremely dry skin, would a hydrating or soothing serum with hyaluronic acid, glycerin or centella be appropriate. It would need to be a lightweight liquid product, so it should be used on clean skin and followed by a moisturiser, in the morning or evening.

Remember: too many products can cause an imbalance in the teen skin barrier, leading to breakouts, excess oil and more.
