Do you have a hobby? Hobbies are a great way to socialise and make lasting friendships. Extracurricular activities have great health benefits, especially for improving your mental health, leaving you feeling positive and enriched.

Looking for low-cost hobbies? We’ve rounded up some accessible and affordable options to give you some inspiration:

1. Army Cadets inspire young people to challenge their limits and grow their abilities. Cadets offer a range of activities such as camping, fieldcraft and first aid training. It’s a brilliant way to build resilience whilst making lasting friendships. The amazing thing is, thanks to the support of the army, the costs are pretty low!

2. Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) is a highly respected qualification that helps young people develop essential life skills, build confidence, and gain experience through volunteering, physical activities, skills development, and expeditions. You can usually access them through your school, college or even through cadets. The best thing about DofE is the memories you make, especially on your expeditions, where you usually go camping for a couple of nights (depending on what award you're doing). The cost of DofE ranges from £30 to £40.

3. Youth clubs are a place where young people can socialise outside of school and participate in a range of activities such as sports, arts and crafts,
music, drama, IT, and social events. The cost of youth clubs varies, but most have affordable memberships and some even offer free entry.

4. Volunteering is a great way to give back
to your community. You can volunteer in your local food bank, animal rescue, care home or even at a hospital. Volunteering can teach you valuable skills like communication, teamwork and time-management.

5. The Scout Association is another organisation that aims to provide fun and adventure for young people aged 4-25. Scouts are a great way to learn commitment, discipline and resilience. Here you can make lifelong memories and friendships to take into adult life.

6. Parkrun is a free, weekly, community event where people of all abilities can walk, jog, run, volunteer, or spectate at a 5k distance. It’s designed to be welcoming
and accommodating to all abilities. So don’t be afraid and try something new to build your health and stamina!

7. Local choirs are a great place to improve your
social skills while doing something you truly love.Joining a choir will allow you to expand your musical awareness, outside of popular or trending songs.
