What is the UV index?

The UV index, (or UVI), is the way that we measure UV radiation levels. The higher the UV measurement, the more quickly damage to your skin and eyes can occur, and the more likely it is to happen.
It ranges from 0 upwards, where less than 2 is considered low risk, and up to 5 requires skin protection like sunscreen or daily SPF.
Just because it’s a cloudy day, doesn’t mean that there is a lower UV – 90% of UV radiation penetrates clouds.
Interesting fact: in many parts of Australia, the UV index rarely goes below 3, so SPF should be worn 365 days of the year.
You can find the UV index for wherever you are, on any given day, through the weather app on your phone.
