What is doom scrolling?

FYI: this article has been written by Arpan, a member of our teen committee.

Picture this: it’s Sunday afternoon, homework is due first thing Monday, you’ve just had your dinner, and you're on social media. Despite knowing all that you have to do, you can’t get off the app.

One more video, one more reel, just one more... it’s like a part of you is watching yourself scroll, unable to stop, even though it’s causing distress. Sound familiar?

This is doom scrolling.

Social media is a great asset, but every good thing has its downsides. The issue isn’t the app itself, but the unhealthy relationship that is built with it. Too much social media content consumption can cause people, especially young people, to become overwhelmed.

Here are some tips I’ve found useful to help reduce your social media consumption:

1. Implement a reward system: so you only watch content after completing your tasks of the day. E.g. homework.

2. Limit screen time: cut down your usage of your app of choice – setting limits can serve as a daily reminder to take a break.

3. Remove the app from your home screen: so you can only access it from the app library.

4. Create accountability: you could have someone hold you accountable, such as a parent, to remind you of your usage.

By using these strategies or making your own, you can take back control and have a more positive relationship with social media, without feeling distressed or overwhelmed. Plus, you can get back to those tasks you’ve been putting off!
